Welcome to the vegan version of our favorite Dutch Apple Pie! The pastry is DELICIOUS, the apples are tender and the custard powder adds just the right amount of smooth and decadent mouthfeel! If you’ve been craving an apple pie this is definitely the one for you!
If you’ve been to the Netherlands (I’m sure other northern European countries also have a similar version) you know exactly which pie I’m talking about!
I remember even having a slice at a small train station in the middle of nowhere while visiting my cousin. I was young, so that memory may be somewhat romanticized. But a warm slice with some whipped cream and a hot drink is just a dream come true, especially on a cold day!
The first time I veganised this recipe it was for my dad’s birthday. That morning was a mess in all the right ways!
It is definitely a cake you want to eat while it’s fresh, but it can last four days in an airtight container ?
This pastry is like the Dutch version of shortbread. So it is super yummy and quite versatile. They make amazing cookies too!

Toss the apple slices in the lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon and custard powder to coat them.
Assemble and Bake!
Press ¾ of the pastry dough into a greased tin (you can use a pottery or pyrex dish, just grease it properly otherwise it will stick – trust me… been there). Keep ¼ for decorating (optional).
Add the filling.
Bake at 200°C for 60 minutes
Notes
Serve straight out the oven with whipped coconut cream!
