HEALTHY MIXED BERRY SMOOTHIE
I’ll admit. I am a smoothie newbie. I was always one of those people who said, “I don’t want to drink my calories”, so I never made or bought smoothies. My thinking was that if I drank my calories I wouldn’t feel full, and would need to eat again in an hour.
I also had a belief (and still do) that smoothies have way to much sugar. And to be honest, most recipes, and store bought smoothies do. I am all for food freedom, and balance, but I also don’t think anyone should be consuming a “healthy” smoothie with 40-60 grams of sugar in one snack/meal, everyday.
Fortunately, I found Kelly LeVeque’s Fab Four Smoothie formula and it changed my mind about smoothies. This formula is designed to balance the blood sugar, along with adding healthy fats, fiber, and protein to keep you feeling full. With this formula in mind, you can truly make a healthy smoothie.
Make sure to include these 4 things in your smoothie:
healthy fat (1 tablespoon healthy fats)
fiber (10 grams minimum)
greens (handful)
protein (20 grams of protein minimum)
HOW TO MAKE A MIXED BERRY SMOOTHIE
This healthy mixed berry smoothie is simple; made with mixed berries (blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries), spinach, almond butter, almond milk, chia seeds, collagen, and ice.
I buy a large frozen bag of mixed berries at the grocery store and keep them in the freezer for a snack or to put in my smoothies. You could also buy individual bags of frozen berries and mix them for this recipe. For a liquid in my smoothie, I used almond milk, but you could use your favorite plant based milk or water.
To add some extra greens and fiber into my day, I added in spinach. Kale, or microgreens would work as well. Lastly, I added in almond butter as a healthy fat, chia seeds for some fiber, and collagen for some protein.
SO,WHAT DO YOU PUT IN A HEALTHY SMOOTHIE?
FRUIT – Stick with low sugar fruits like blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, or strawberries.
If you want the smoothie to be sweeter, add maple syrup or honey 1 teaspoon at a time.
I recommend using organic frozen berries! Look in the frozen section at your grocery store. If you do not have frozen berries, freeze your fresh berries up to 1 hour before putting them in the smoothie.
I use my Ninja Kitchen System to make smoothies and love it! It is affordable and does everything from blending, to processing. Vitamix is also a popular choice for a high powered blender.
