I swear this adorable ‘It’s an Avocado’ video blew up avocado’s. Avocado’s were always available, but we Americans don’t eat things until a viral video comes out apparently. I never remember them being so popular before, but maybe that’s because I didn’t eat healthy for the first 20 years of my life. ????

Ever since then they have been extremely popular, and people are finding so many ways to include them in recipes. And smoothies are a no brainier because avocado’s are so creamy. They add the perfect thickness/creaminess to smoothies and of course avocado’s have amazing nutritional value.

  • It’s whole-food ingredients that taste like a chocolate milkshake! You’ll feel great after drinking this.
  • This smoothie has healthy fats, fiber and protein to keep you feeling full and satiated.
  • It’s easy and simple to make in just 5 minutes.
  • If you’re a chocolate lover, this one’s for you. This healthy chocolate smoothie will keep you on track with your healthy eating goals.

  • banana- freeze your banana a few hours before making. I buy a bunch a week and freeze them in my Stasher bag.
  • avocado- make sure to choose a ripe avocado. See below for info on how to pick the perfect avocado!
  • cacao powder– I use the brand Nativas Organics. You can use cocoa powder as well, but I recommend choosing a brand that’s Fair Trade Certified such as Equal Exchange Organic Baking Cocoa.
  • collagen I use Great Lakes! It’s the best! You can also use your favorite protein powder. If you are Vegan, omit the collagen.
  • almond milk- If you don’t have almond milk, you can use cashew milk or water.
  • vanilla- if you don’t have vanilla, the smoothie will still taste good!
  • optional (spinach)- I prefer to throw some leafy greens into my smoothie. Just beware, the more you add the more green your smoothie will get.
  • add ins- cacao nibs, chia seeds, hemp seeds

Avocado’s have a load of health benefits. You’ve probably heard that avocado’s are a healthy fat, but they are truly so much more. They provide your body with:

  • more potassium than a banana
  • healthy fats (good for skin health, brain health, & heart health)
  • fiber (feeds your friendly gut bacteria that’s important for digestion)
  • folate (great for pregnancy)
  • antioxidants (important for eye health)

I’ve been there… Your at the store wanting to buy some avocado’s for the first time. You pick some up, bring them home, and either cut into a super ripe or unripe one. You become so confused on what is going on with this strange fruit.

To find the perfect avocado for this smoothie recipe, look for a ripe avocado. Look for an avocado that is a darker brown color, and not green. Pick the avocado up, and give it a gentle squeeze. It should feel light and soft to the touch, not mushy.

Avocado guide:

Unripe avocado– the avocado is too firm, and isn’t soft to the touch. It also has a bright green color

Perfectly ripe avocado– it is firm, but also soft to the touch.

Too ripe avocado- the flesh of the avocado when squeezed is too mushy, and a dark brown color
