How To Grill Homemade Chicken Burgers

These grilled cilantro lime chicken burgers are easy with just 5 minutes of prep time. The steps to make them are just like making a traditional hamburger on the grill.

Start with using ground chicken, add in the cilantro, garlic, lime juice, and seasonings. Mix the ingredients together with clean hands, but be sure not overwork the mixture. Now you can form the mixture into patties using your hands. The patties shouldn’t stick to your hands but if they do, wet your hands before forming the patties.

Now you can grill the patties just like you do a normal hamburger. I highly recommend using an instant read thermometer to make sure you don’t overcook the burgers.

What Goes With These Chicken Burgers?

Think “Mexican” sides and flavors to pair with these chicken burgers. To keep it Paleo, I paired mine with homemade avocado salsa, a lettuce “bun” and sweet potato fries.

You can also serve the burgers on top of a salad or with grilled veggies like bell peppers, zucchini or squash. If you want a real bun for your burger try these pillowy soft burger buns that are gluten free, keto, and paleo.

Tips For Grilling Chicken Burgers

  • Clean the grill. If you used your grill previously and have yet to clean it, now is the time. Use a wired brush to scrape old food off the grates.
  • Oil the grill grate. Spray or spread oil over the hot grates right before placing the patties on. This will prevent the patties from sticking to the grates.
  • Wait until the grill is hot. Don’t add the chicken patties until the grill reaches medium-high heat. Every gas grill is different but this ranges from (350-450 degrees).
  • Don’t mess with the patties. Once you place the chicken patties on the grill, don’t touch them until it is time to flip them over. This will make sure the flavor stays with the burger.
  • Keep the lid of your grill closed when the burgers are cooking.
  • Don’t over cook the burgers. Check the burgers at 14 minutes with an internal meat thermometer to see if they have reached 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Description

These grilled cilantro lime chicken burgers with avocado salsa are so juicy and bursting with flavor! The burgers are made with ground chicken and flavored with a cilantro lime marinade right in the burger. Top the burgers off with the avocado salsa and serve with a lettuce bun. It’s the ultimate healthy burger recipe that you’ll want to make all summer! Paleo, Whole30, and Keto too!

Ingredients

Scale

for the chicken burgers

  • 1 pound ground chicken, (preferably organic)
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 1/3 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 tablespoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

for the avocado salsa

  • 1 medium-large ripe avocado, diced
  • 1/2 cup red onion, diced
  • 1/3 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1/2 lime, juiced
  • salt, to taste

Instructions

  1. Oil the grill grates and preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
  2. In a medium size bowl, with your hands mix together ground chicken, lime juice, chopped cilantro, minced garlic, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Be careful not to over handle the mixture. Form chicken mixture into 6 patties and place them on a baking sheet.
  3. Grill the patties for 14-20 minutes, flipping half-way through. The cooking time depends on how thick your patties are as well as the grill you have. Check the internal temperature of your patties at 14 minutes. It should reach at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
  4. While the burgers are cooking, make the avocado salsa. Combine the diced avocado, red onion, cilantro, lime juice, and salt in a small bowl. Once the burgers are cooked, top the burgers with avocado salsa, and serve with lettuce “buns”.

Notes

  • To cook in the oven: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place chicken patties on prepared baking sheet. Bake for 15-20 minutes, flipping burgers halfway through. Bake until chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit or is no longer pink.
  • To cook in the skillet: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat on the stove. Melt 1 tablespoon of olive oil and add chicken patties to the skillet (you may have to work in batches). Let them cook for 5 minutes, then flip the burgers over and cook for another 4-5 minutes, or until burgers reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
